The Future of Design Jobs

With the upcoming of AI comes the worry for our jobs as designers in the industry. Everyone can make a flyer or logo now, so will the world really need trained designers? I think so. Just like the differences between using a Content Management System (CMS) or hand coding a website, there are features a hand coding can get you that a CMS cannot. You can use any free graphic editor or AI to get a free flyer or logo, but to get the best experience, a designer would be the best option.

Using AI to simply make is easy, but to gauge how well it actually did in creating a pretty yet effective asset would still require some design knowledge, so maybe that will be the option for those who can decipher what makes something good, but for those on lower levels they may tend to lean towards a designer, as that is the best route.

Jobs will surely be effected by AI in the future, and not just design jobs. But just as traditional art never died out, I think there will always be a place for design jobs, no matter the AI

Adobe AI for Everybody

Over the past couple of year Adobe has continued to add more and more AI products, but why? Don’t they have trust in their designers to not need to use the stepping stool that is AI?

Well, not only can these AI products be used to leverage an already good design/designer, but having the opportunity for these AI products mean that those who may be more “creatively challenged” can be using Adobe products too. Saying it that way makes it seem more money driven, which it may be, but that doesn’t deny that by adding more AI products, more people may be enticed to use their Software.

Govind Balakrishnan, senior vice president, Adobe Express and Digital Media Services at Adobe stated at Adobe MAX 2023 that “The groundbreaking AI-first innovations in Express are empowering our Creative Cloud members and creators of all levels to bring their ideas to life in completely new ways that are fast, easy and fun,” AI certainly is fast, easy, and fun, so it’s superb that they are opening the creative opportunity to individuals of all levels.

The Pros of Adobe AI

Adobe has provided a plethora of AI products throughout these past years, and the quality and usability of these products has only been getting greater as time goes on. Tools like generative fill let you expand a picture, completely change background, or even add the most bizarre things. Adobe has given us this product in which so much great content can be crafted

Sure, AI products are bound to be used maliciously, but whether or not AI was used in the end won’t matter because that malicious content would have been created with or without AI eventually, it would have just taken longer.

Adobe’s AI products can also help you create a wonderful template or rough idea of what you want to create. Because the AI has endless possibilities it will never be short on ideas, which means if your feeling a bit burnt out and need some quick inspo, why not use a quick AI prompt for some ideas? Adobe’s Generative fill, or Adobe Expresses Text to Image give you the ability to get those juices up and running.

These AI products are pretty cool because you don’t NEED to use them to create something awesome, but by using these tools, you can enhance your content in ways you may never have thought of.

The Cons of Adobe AI

Adobe has AI tools such as the generative fill, text to image, and content aware fill. While these creations are ground breaking, they bring opportunities for as many good intentions as they do bad intentions. Taking into consideration the current state of the world, misinformation is a big deal, and using AI is an easy way to alter content to create new meanings and stir drama.

An article I just read shared how big companies were worried about AI generated images, video, and audio that could deceive voters about the candidates and more. Adobe has done wonderful things with AI which make some processes so much easier or fun. But creating these inventions gives those with ill-intentions to easily start something.

Overall, integrating AI features into Adobe products has been a great process, and when used it’s used for great content the possibilities are endless, but unfortunately, unless you have a great eye for all things crafted with AI, you could get caught up in a misinformation storm.
